Why We Do What We do

The Kind Collective operates and runs-NJGroundhogs(NJG)-our mail-based drug analysis program providing community surveillance of our local supply. This is a a collaborative effort under the umbrella of PAGroundhogs (PAG), working with The Center for Forensic Science Research & Education (CFSRE) and Narcomedia LLC. We provide no-to-low-cost drug checking services and technology designed to reduce public health risks from the influx of new and potentially dangerous synthetic compounds into New Jersey’s unregulated drug supply.

Our multidisciplinary leadership team includes some of the earliest pioneers of community-based drug checking. We leverage expertise in chemistry, toxicology, ethnography, epidemiology, data analysis, geopolitics, and lived experience to provide a uniquely comprehensive understanding of not only the current state of New Jersey’s illicit drug supply, but — to the best of our ability — how and why it has evolved this way

Service Areas
Mass Spectrometry Analysis
Street-to-lab drug checking and confirmatory testing are conducted through our partner laboratory, the Center for Forensic Science Research & Education (CFSRE) in Horsham, PA. Using advanced instrumentation—including GC/MS, LC/MS, and LC-qTOF—CFSRE provides high-quality quantitative analysis and is nationally recognized for its expertise in identifying novel psychoactive substances. Each NJGroundhogs (NJG) Test Kit supports the quantitative lab analysis of one drug sample.

NJG uses these results to monitor changes in the local drug supply and share timely, accurate information with the community. To request a free starter kit and support ongoing monitoring efforts.

Harm Reduction Services
NJGroundhogs is a program under The Kind Collective, a community-based harm reduction organization in Trenton, NJ. We provide direct community services and support a wide range of harm reduction needs across the 609.
Community Education
NJGroundhogs supports communities across New Jersey by expanding access to drug checking information, tools, and practical guidance. Through our broader network, we can offer educational materials on the benefits of drug checking, as well as virtual orientations, presentations, and consulting for organizations or municipalities interested in strengthening their harm reduction strategies.

If you’d like more details about these services or are interested in support for an upcoming event, feel free to reach out and NJG will help get you connected.
Community Monitoring Reports
NJGroundhogs (NJG) monitors the Trenton drug supply using lab-tested samples and real-time community insights. In collaboration with the Center for Forensic Science Research & Education (CFSRE) and PA Groundhogs, we track shifts in the local supply to identify emerging trends and potential risks.
Our harm reduction team stays closely connected to the community and to NJG’s ongoing work, ensuring we remain up to date on changes that may impact people’s safety. By sharing timely, accurate alerts with residents and partners, we help our community make informed decisions and stay safer.
Because the drug supply is unstable and constantly evolving, continuous monitoring—grounded in both science and lived experience—is essential to reducing harm and saving lives.
